The Verspeeten Cartage Peewee Local League Express
traveled to Norwich Saturday to take on the Delhi Rockets for the Intertown Peewee
B Championship. The two top teams put on
a great show for family and friends and in the end the hometown Express handed
the Rockets their first loss in 2017.
The game opened with the Ingersoll crew looking a little nervous but goaltender Hayden White made a couple of huge saves to keep the game scoreless. As the first period neared an end and the Express relaxed, Cameron White rushed up the ice from his defense position and ripped a wrist shot high over the Delhi goaltender’s shoulder to give the Express a 1-0 lead with two minutes to go in the first. The lead was short-lived though as Delhi replied 30 seconds later. Keagan Clifford then dug a puck out of a scrum just inside the Ingersoll blue line and Emmitt Robinson picked it up, raced the length of the ice beating both Delhi defenders and deposited the puck behind the Rocket’s goalie. After one period the score was 2-1 for the Express.
Both teams traded chances through the second but neither could manage a goal. Four minutes into the third Clifford took a pass in front of the net from Robinson and buried it behind Delhi’s goalie to give the Express their first 2 goal lead of the game. Delhi came right back and scored a power play goal less than a minute later to narrow the gap to one. Both teams continued to press and everyone in the stands held their breath as the two teams went up and down the ice over the final 9 minutes. Neither team could score again as the Verspeeten Express held on for a dramatic 3-2 win.
