Verspeeten Cartage Drives Home From Tillsonburg With The Win
Traveling to Tillsonburg on December 8th, Verspeeten Cartage treated their fans to an amazing display of hockey talent with confidence and tenacity. Verspeeten goalie, Brodie Carbaugh, was on fire, which seemed to set a tone within the rest of his team. Tillsonburg opened scoring quickly, but were then the receivers of two quick goals by Verspeeten Cartage.

The Tillsonburg game strategy caught Verspeeten defense ahead of a Tillsonburg “cherry picker” several times. Some of those times, Verspeeten’s goalie was unable to stop the blast from the Tillsonburg break-away. One of those break-aways was stopped with a tripping penalty which was taken by a Verspeeten player, putting Carbaugh into a position of facing a penalty shot. The stands were quiet, breathing stopped among the fans as the Tillsonburg player approached Carbaugh alone on the ice. Carbaugh, however, shut down the penalty shot, sending the puck way wide of his net.

Verspeeten’s defense was very active as usual, as they often took advantage of open lanes on the rink, carrying the puck to the door-step of the Tillsonburg goalie and creating scrambles in front of the Tillsonburg net. Jack Van Egdom shut down some attempted body checking from Tillsonburg as he stood his ground against a checking onslaught from a Tillsonburg Peewee player. Meanwhile, Kristopher Procter faced a slap-shot and received the puck against a small bare area of his shin. Meanwhile, Brandon Seed was down as a result of a major checking incident and was eventually helped to his skates by the team’s trainer, amidst applause and support from fans and players on both sides of the ice. Sportsmanship was alive and well throughout this rough and tumble game.

Verspeeten continued to score with only three minutes on the clock, taking a face-off and bringing the puck directly into the Tillsonburg net. Tillsonburg would not be silenced, as they often answered back with goals of their own, keeping themselves within reach of a tie. Ingersoll’s Verspeeten Cartage was determined, however, and continued the barrage of shots on the Tillsonburg goalie, who was beaten by Verspeeten a total of 8 times - with the last few goals coming in the final two minutes of the game.

The final score of this incredibly exciting match-up was Tillonsburg 5, Ingersoll’s Verspeeten Cartage 8.

Scoring for Verspeeten Cartage was Jacob Branderhorst, Nolan Costa who was assisted by Mark Tucker, Ethan Vlemmix and Branderhorst. Tucker would go on to put the puck into the Tillsonburg net with an assist by Costa, while Mathew Debruyn scored an unassisted goal. Branderhorst and Costa both finished the game hat-tricks!

With all the great passing and team play on the Verspeeten team, this writer believes Tillsonburg didn’t have much of a chance at a win. Let’s hope this great group of hockey players can hang on to this wonderful team play and bring that great skill to bear on all future opponents.

Verspeeten's next game is at home on December 10th, as they roll out the red carpet for Port Dover. Come on out and watch these amazing kids play some wicked hockey!
