For Love Of The Game
Submitted By kprocter on Monday, April 3, 2017
For love of the game, Shooters Sports Photography midgets invited Aylmer Express to an exhibition match-up.  As the home bench filled with Ingersoll’s eighteen players, their numbers dwarfed the population of Aylmer’s bench, who were sporting a confident eight of their own.  This game would be an example of what minor hockey should be – in this writer’s opinion.  (Grapes would vehemently disagree!)

In the first period, Ingersoll’s Abram Saunders opened the scoring, with an assist from Kristopher Procter.  Only eleven seconds later, Nolan Costa found the mesh behind Aylmer’s goalie, with help from Austin George and Aaron Lonsberry.  The third and final unanswered goal of the period was assisted by Craig Wild and Justin Burns, as Procter put the puck past the Aylmer goal keeper.

The second period continued as a clean game, with great sportsmanship on display.  Five players from Shooters Sports Photography were rapidly firing the puck at the Aylmer net, while that team’s goalie was virtually standing on his head, stopping every shot!  Finally, following more than ten volleys, the Aylmer goalie gained control of the puck.  Ingersoll players all gave Aylmer’s goalie a glove-bump of approval for his amazing talents.

The game would continue with this kind of sportsmanship, but that wouldn’t stop Ingersoll from taking more goals.

Burns received the puck from Procter and Saunders, and then put it away.  Three minutes later, still in the second period, Dimitri Carvalho took two points, with help from Paul Shearer, Avery Shrigley, and Justin Koch.

Ingersoll would continue their scoring into the third period, as Lonsberry put the puck in the net with assistance from Saunders.  Later in the period, with less than two minutes to play, something happened on the ice which this writer will not acknowledge in this article.  The referees had the time keeper run the clock, as the two teams’ skaters stood near their benches.  The ice became clear, except for the goalies from each team.  As their fans and team mates looked on, the goalies took shots at each other.  It was unique and truly great way to end a wonderful game.

The final score was 7 to 3, for Ingersoll’s Shooters Sports Photography.  The winners of this game, however, were the two teams who were great examples of good sportsmanship.  The fans too, won a wonderful experience of seeing their children, siblings, friends, ending the season on such a high note.
