Express drop tight one to Listowel
The Glenda Ponsonby Ingersoll/Oxford Realty Ingersoll Express peewee rep team took to the ice on Friday afternoon to take on the Listowel Cyclones in the second game of their International Silver Stick Tournament Final. The team played a long hard fought game, but ended up on the short end of the stick in a 2-1 shootout loss.
After a late start to the game thanks to the game prior running long, the teams took to the ice for a long feeling out period. The Listowel netminder looked shaky, and it seemed that he was just getting his body in front of the Ingersoll shots in the nick of time. But as the game went on he gained confidence, and continued to turn away everything that Ingersoll was putting on net. After two periods the teams went to the dressing rooms for the flood, neither team having gained an edge.
Ingersoll came out for the third period and seemed determined to take the bull by the horns and gain control of the game. Things seemed to be going well when, 3 minutes in to the third, Justin Holmes got a breakaway and was able to slide the puck through the legs of the Listowel 'tender, putting Ingersoll on the board 1-0. Listwel refused to give up though, and the teams continued a back and forth tight game, until, with 1:20 left on the clock, Listowel was able to notch a power play marker and even things up. Nothing was solved in the last minute of the game, nor in the 10 minute overtime period. So it was on to the shootout.
Each team provided 3 shooters to the refs, and the teams went to work. When all was said and done, Listowel outscored Ingersoll 1-0 in the shootout, and took the game 2-1.
The team next takes to the ice on Saturday afternoon, when they take on the Ayr Flames in Thedford at 2:15.
