It is said that first appearances can sometimes be misleading
and this was very true Tuesday night at the Ingersoll District Memorial Centre,
where the visiting Lambton Shores Predators contained the puck within the
Carmeuse end for first ten minutes of the game.
Carmeuse net-minder, #30 Ryan Calder, was on high alert as he aptly kept
the puck out of the net, directing rebounds to his teammates who continued to
play with patient focus. As the clock
clicked down in the last five minutes of the period, Tanner Moon, #16, escaped the
grasp of the Predators and skated directly to the Predators’ net where he
scored the game’s first goal at 4:40.
Carmeuse’s patient focus was now on offense, as the remainder of the period played out in the Predators’ end. The clock showed :59, as #20 Devin Freeman, assisted by Moon and #10 Aaron Lonsberry, put the puck into the net.
The second period featured some very exciting hockey and numerous offensive opportunities at each end of the ice. At the fourteen minute mark, Carmeuse was busy with one of their offensive opportunities, when the puck made its way through the neutral zone and into the Carmeuse end. Seeing the offensive opportunity slipping away, Calder came out to play the puck. As Calder made the play, a Predator who appeared unable to stop or negotiate a turn landed on top of Calder. #19 Dawson Kays and #4 Zach Catry were each awarded four minutes for head contact after they came to the aid of their goaltender who was face-down on the ice. The Predator would receive two minutes for interference.
In the third period, Moon got Carmeuse back to the business of strong offense, scoring the period’s first two goals within one minute. The first at 11:02, assisted by Freeman and #9 Ryan Cooper and at 10:14, assisted by #2 Jesse Carew, earning himself a hat trick for the evening. Just a little over a minute later, #5 Riley Jayne, assisted by #8 Sam Tasker made the score 5-0. Freeman, assisted by Lonsberry and Moon, would score his second of the night at 1:37.
At 14:19 of the third period, Jayne, assisted by #14 Chris Dimmers and Carew, would make the score 7-0. As the clock counted down, Carmeuse became a very tight unit as they successfully worked hard to protect the shut-out for their net-minder.
This win was not without consequence, as two of the Carmeuse defensemen incurred suspensions. Catry received a one-game suspension for checking from behind and Carew a five-game suspension for instigator and fighting.
Carmeuse travel to the Ilderton Arena later today, to play the hometown Ilderton Jets tonight at 9:20.
