Golden Puck Hockey Weekend
Carving Ice has been the cornerstone of activity among the Verspeeten Cartage Peewees, since the last hockey article creation by yours truly.Verspeeten has met with Tillsonburg on Ingersoll ice and they’ve travelled to Simcoe. Though they’ve had great excitement, the big Verspeeten road trip was their very talented showing at the Golden Puck Hockey Tournament in Port Colborne.

Starting Saturday, February 23, Verspeeten Cartage met with their hosts - Port Colborne - in a matchup that saw Verspeeten fight with honour to capture the game with a score of 3 to 1. Jacob Branderhorst managed to put the puck home twice, with the assistance of Kristopher Procter and Jack Van Egdom. Mark Tucker also tasted victory as his shot met with the back of the Port Colborne net, via the assistance of Brandon Seed and Van Egdom.

Later on that same day, the Lefroy Icebreakers met with Ingersoll’s Verspeeten Cartage. Although Verspeeten did not manage a win, they did manage to pull out three goals. Jacob Branderhorst put the puck away once, and Graydon Macdonald found the Lefroy net twice, with assistance from Van Egdom and David Timleck.

The final and most exciting game was played on February 24, when Ingersoll met up with a team from Pelham. Pelham was solid and believed to be a juggernaut Verspeeten did not cower in the shadow of this juggernaut, however, and the players poured their all into the game. They were down by two points as Pelham had somehow beaten Brodi Carbaugh’s magic in net. With a score of 4 to 2, Verspeeten poured on the gas and brought the game to a tie. Pelham would have none of it and they managed to put one more goal into the Verspeeten net. As the final minutes of the game appeared on the clock, the coaching staff pulled their goalie and sent forth a sixth attacker in a bold attempt to tie the game. However, a Pelham sniper took the puck and managed to launch it into the empty Verspeeten net. The final score of this very exciting game was 6 to 4. Scores for Ingersoll were put into the Pelham net by Branderhorst, who scored two goals with the assistance of Ethan Vlemmix and Procter, as well as Paul Shearer. Marisa Freeman also found an open gateway in the Pelham net, with assistance of Hailey Wright and Macdonald. Van Egdom put the final score into the Pelham net thanks to assistance from Vlemmix!

Verspeeten Cartage coaching staff, as well as the team players themselves, were all very happy with their showing in this game, and all the games of this tournament. This writer heard one of the Verspeeten players comment on Saturday night, “This is the best tournament ever!”
