11-03-2018 Express Shut Out by Wildcats
Submitted By Mike Martineau

The Carmeuse Lime Midget local league team traveled to Waterford November 3rd to face off against the Wildcats. With only nine skaters in the lineup, the Express held their own in the early going.

Down 1 to 0 midway through the first period, Evan Wade carried the puck into the zone, cut into the middle, but misfired on the shot from the slot. Later in the period, Caleb Clifford, Brydon Johnson and Lucas Heather had an opportunity to put Ingersoll on the board as a three on one rush developed. Clifford ended up in the Waterford net, but the puck stayed out. Dawson Sharpe stopped a blistering slap shot and gobbled up the rebound to keep the Express within 2 as the opening period wound down.

The teams continued to trade chances in the second. Sharpe kept the game from getting out of reach with solid goaltending early in the period. Johnson showed good hustle getting in behind the Waterford defence, flipping a shot on net and picking up his own rebound at the 5 minute mark.  Two minutes later, Avery Shrigley stripped the Wildcats defender of the puck and surprised Paul Shearer with a no-look behind the back pass. Shearer was bowled over before he could get a shot away, but there was no penalty called on the play. With Ingersoll down 3-0 and applying pressure late in the period, Lucas Heather drew a penalty behind the Waterford net, but the Express failed to cash in with the man advantage.

A minute into the third period Evan Wade got into a shoving match along the boards with number 9 from the Wildcats. Coincidental penalties were handed out, but Wade lost his cool and was ejected. Down to eight skaters, Ingersoll continued to try to claw their way back into the game. Shrigley was dumped as he stormed into the offensive zone, but while sprawled out on the ice the big Ingersoll forward reached out with his stick and tripped up the Wildcats defenceman, negating the powerplay. Minutes later, a dangerous collision behind the Ingersoll goal involving Lucas White and number 18 of the Wildcats sent the net crashing forward on top of Dawson Sharpe, but luckily no one was hurt and no penalties were called on the play. The Express came close to breaking the shutout with 3 minutes remaining when a Daniel Martineau shot from the blue line ping-ponged off of forwards Paul Shearer and Lucas Heather before trickling just wide of the post. Waterford added a late goal to skate away with a 4-0 victory.
