Express move on!!
In front of a packed house Saturday night, the Glenda Ponsonby Ingersoll/Oxford Realty Ingersoll Express Peewee rep hockey team put on an exhibition that rivaled the excitement of the recent Team Canada Women's gold medal game.  Going into the game against the Ayr Flames, the teams were tied 2 games apiece, with this being the fifth and ultimately deciding game.  Each team had won two games in their own arena, giving Ingersoll the mental edge going into the game.

The first period started off with Ingersoll mounting tremendous pressure against Ayr, keeping them penned deep in their own end for the first few shifts.  Midway through the period though, the momentum shifted a bit, and Aur started to put the pressure on Ingersoll in their defensive zone.  It was during this sustained pressure that an attempt shot block accidentally turned into a deflection that beat Ingersoll's netminder Jayden Purdy, giving Ayr the 1-0 lead.

At the 8 minute mark of the second period, with Ingersoll shorthanded, a penalty shot was called against Ingersoll, putting more pressure on Purdy who had been playing stellar.  The Ayr player came in on Purdy and made some great moves, leading to the goal sliding past Purdy and putting Ayr ahead 2-0.  Ingersoll refused to let up though, and continued to keep pressing, knowing that their turn would come.  With 2:47 to go in the second period on a gorgeous 2-on-1 play, Clayton Hammond fed the puck to Keegan Clark who found the back of the wide open net, breaking the shutout and drawing Ingesroll back within one shot of tying the game.

On to the third period, and Ingersoll had to keep pressing while Ayr tried to tighten up defensively.  Less than two minutes into the period on a scramble at the Ayr net the puck slid out to Clark again, who had the open side to put home the tying goal, turning the game into a seemingly sudden death situation.  The teams went back and forth through the next 13 minutes, solving nothing, and it was on to overtime.

The first overtime period saw Ingersoll have some marvelous chances, but the puck just wouldn't sit still at the right time to allow the sticks to get onto it.  After nearly ten minutes of this back and forth play, Ayr took a body contact penalty when a player came off the team's bench and skated directly at an Ingersoll forward, without an attempt to play the puck.  Thinking the referees may have put their whistles away for the overtime, it was surprising (although not undeserved) that a penalty was called.  With the team up 5-on-4 and 40 seconds to go in the period, it was time to really mount the pressure.  The boys kept pressing at the Ayr zone, and with 3.8 seconds to go in the first overtime period, the puck squirted out to, who else?, Keegan Clark who was able to finish off the natural hat trick, giving Ingersoll the victory in the game and the series, and moving them on to face Petrolia in the provincial semi-finals.

Congrats to all the boys on the team - excellent job done.

The team returns to the ice on Saturday at noon when they travel to Plattsville for a Southern Counties playoff game.
